The son of an IB officer and his friend were arrested in the national capital for allegedly mugging elderly women.

The son of an Intelligence Bureau officer and his friend were arrested in the national capital for allegedly mugging elderly women on morning walks and decamping with their jewellery and valuables.

The teenagers, who were ‘inspired’ by a Hollywood flick ‘Underground’,were using the cash and jewellery to fund dates with their girlfriends,Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Shalini Singh said.

Sangat and his friend Balwinder, both aged 19 years, allegedly targeted elderly women on morning walks in CR Park and Kalkaji in south-east Delhi for the past four months. The receiver of the stolen items was also arrested.

On the modus operandi,Singh said, one of the boys used to gag and pin down their target on a lonely stretch while the other intervened showing concern and trying to help the woman.

While helping the woman, she said, the second boy allegedly would pocket the jewellery using a cable-cutter.

Then the boys would then flee from the spot on their motorcycle, the official said, adding they never carried a weapon. They apparently learnt the trick of pinning a woman to the ground from the Hollywood movie.

“We had received two complaints from the RWAs. After that,we formed decoy teams to nab them and they fell into the trap a week ago,” Singh said.
