Hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who was arrested last week to prevent him from addressing students of a medical college here in connection with his campaign for withdrawal of troops from the state, has been released on bail.
Geelani was released by police at the Soura Medical Institute, where he was undergoing treatment since his arrest on November 17.
A local court granted him bail yesterday after which he was released, official sources said on Sunday.
Earlier on Thursday,a court granted him bail but he was not released by police and instead was booked in another case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Geelani, who is suffering from various ailments, was arrested in June this year for spearheading an agitation against the alleged rape and murder of two women in Shopian in May. He was released after 95 days with a court quashing his detention under the Public Safety Act in September but was put under house arrest a day after he was freed.
Geelani moved a court which ordered lifting of restrictions on his movement. On October 23,Geelani dodged police to reach Shopian in south Kashmir to campaign for withdrawal of troops from the state.
