A Special Operations Team (SOT) of the Cyberabad Police on Tuesday busted a gang making fake identity and credit cards in Hyderabad and arrested 13 people who defrauded various banks to the tune of Rs.63.5 lakh.
Cyberabad police commissioner CV Anand told reporters that the police seized 167 credit cards of various banks, 196 PAN cards and 199 voter ID cards from the gang.
As many as 57 mobile phones, 155 SIM cards, 37 land phones and other equipment used to make fake cards were also seized.
Jagan Mohan Reddy, a native of Warangal district settled in Hyderabad, was the kingpin of the gang. The arrested include employees of few private banks, a courier company and a telecom service provider.
Also involved in the racket was a notary who used to attest documents with or without knowing that they were all fake. Based on his attested copies, an advocate used to file for Date of Birth Certificates and a magistrate of Secunderabad Court used to issue them.
The kingpin Reddy would pass on these documents to his agents who would apply online for PAN and Voter ID cards. While PANs were issued without verification through UTI/NSDL, the GHMC employee who works in the particular department approved the voter ID applications without any checks and generate EPIC which Reddy’s agents used to get cards printed at Mee Seva centres.
Reddy studied up to class 10 and worked at construction sites in Warangal. He moved to Hyderabad about 10 years ago and worked as field verification official with ICICI Bank-City Finance and RPVS Chartered Accountants officer. “While working there he gained knowledge about the process of verification and issuing of credit cards. After gaining considerable experience he hatched a plan to make easy money and involved many contacts in came in touch with over the years,’’ an official said.
