DTC low-floor bus catches fire; 8th incident in 25 days

In the eighth such incident in nearly a month,a low-floor DTC bus caught fire in South Delhi but no one was injured in the incident.

“The bus caught fire at around 3:25 pm but no one was hurt. The driver stopped the bus soon after the incident. It was a minor fire and no one was injured. There was some problem in the engine which resulted in the fire,” the officials said.

This is the eighth incident in the past 25 days when a low-floor bus of the DTC has caught fire. The Delhi government has instituted an inquiry into the series of such incidents.

The government had earlier imposed a hefty fine of Rs four crore on Tata Motors for ‘not properly’ maintaining the low-floor buses it manufactured. It had also decided to withhold a payment of Rs 150 crore to the Tatas and warned of legal action if corrective steps were not taken by the automobile giant.

As per the contract,Tata Motors is responsible for maintenance of the 800 bus fleet supplied to DTC. However,Tata Motors has cited bad road condition as the reason behind the mishaps.
