Cong panel may ask Tharoor to explain

Antony is learnt to have met Vora on Friday. Shinde, however, was not present as he is busy campaigning in Maharashtra.

Trouble seems to be brewing for Shashi Tharoor. With its Kerala unit demanding appropriate action against him for his continuous praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress’s central disciplinary action committee has taken up the matter indicating that the high command is seriously viewing the issue.

Sources said the panel, comprising A K Antony, Sushil Kumar Shinde and Motilal Vora, could ask Tharoor to explain his side. Antony is learnt to have met Vora on Friday. Shinde, however, was not present as he is busy campaigning in Maharashtra.

Tharoor, an AICC spokesperson, had come under severe attack from Kerala Congress leaders after he said he felt “honoured” to accept Modi’s invitation to join the Swachh Bharat Mission. Many leaders went on to openly demand disciplinary action against him. Later the KPCC officially asked the high command to take appropriate action against him.

The KPCC’s argument was that Tharoor has been repeatedly praising Modi. Days after Modi was sworn in as PM, Tharoor said his comments so far been “very conciliatory and inclusive”. Later, he said the Congress should not be “churlish” to ignore his inclusive outreach.
