The Centre is all set to reimpose the ban on NSCN-K, the insurgent group believed to have been behind the June 4 attack on an Army convoy in Chandel district of Manipur in which 18 soldiers were killed.
The SS Khaplang-led group, which abrogated the ceasefire with India in March this year, will be banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The NSCN-K was a banned outfit till 2001. However, after the group entered into a ceasefire agreement with the government, the ban was lifted.

The Centre will move the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for invoking the ban and after the Union Cabinet’s approval, the NSCN-K will be declared a banned outfit under the UAPA, sources said.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has cited three incidents to ban the group. First, the June 4 attack on the Army convoy. Second, the May 4 attack on a convoy of Assam Rifles, which killed eight jawans and injured six others in Changlang Su area of Mon district in Nagaland. Third, the April 2 attack on an Army convoy in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh.
At present, the NSCN-K chief, a resident of Myanmar, is admitted at a Yangon hospital.
