Giving in to the CBI’s demand, the government is likely to announce more autonomy for the agency, with the status of Secretary for its director.

Sources said CBI director Ranjit Sinha will be empowered to approve planned expenditure up to Rs 15 crore. The move to provide financial autonomy to the agency was discussed at a meeting between the CBI director and DoPT Secretary last week.

While the Opposition has often accused the Centre of misusing the agency for political gains, the Supreme Court had also described the CBI as a “caged” bird and emphasised the need to give it more powers.

The CBI had earlier said its director should be given a minimum three-year term and Secretary-level status.
