Normally, a new incumbent gets a week's time to take charge, but Shukla, who was appointed on Saturday, took the reins of the agency within two days in the backdrop of the agency's tussle with the Kolkata Police which broke out on Sunday, officials said.
The committee, which is headed by PM Modi and also includes Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, is likely to meet again. The meeting comes two weeks after Alok Verma was ousted as CBI chief.
On Tuesday, Kharge wrote to the PM, calling the appointment of Rao as interim Director of the agency “illegal” and also asked for the immediate convening of the selection committee to appoint a new CBI chief without further delay.
The ousted CBI chief, in his letter to DoPT, said "Natural justice was scuttled and the entire process was turned upside down in ensuring that the undersigned is removed from the post of the Director CBI."
