British Columbia to allow Sikhs to enter courts with kirpans
Amritsar: From Friday,Sikhs can carry kirpan with them in British Columbia court houses,subject to certain guidelines. With this,British Columbia will join Toronto and Alberta where similar procedures were announced last year. Sikhs will be permitted to wear the kirpan in public areas of British Columbia court houses,subject to an individualised risk assessment and guidelines,the World Sikh Organization (WSO) said. According to the guidelines,a person who wishes to enter a British Columbia court house wearing a kirpan must identify himself as a Khalsa Sikh and inform the court officer that he is carrying a kirpan All articles of the Sikh faith must be worn and be available for proof,if required. The kirpan must also be worn under clothes,the WSO added.
Notice to SSP after SHO threatens man
Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court Thursday directed the SSP,Mansa to conduct an enquiry into an allegation levelled by Satgur Singh of Bareta,who filed an application in the court stating that he was being pressurised by the police to withdraw a PIL filed by him in the court. Satgur had filed a PIL,few months back,seeking prosecution of certain persons who have carved out an unauthorized colony named Model Town Bareta. He alleged that he was called by SHO of Bareta police station,Yadwinder Singh,and threatened that if he did not withdraw the PIL,he would be implicated in a false case.
Fill SC seats: SC panel to Punjabi University
Chandigarh: Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission Thursday directed the Punjabi University,Patiala,to fill SC backlog within six months. Presiding over a meeting with the university authorities,Commissions chairman Rajesh Bagha also directed the officials not to charge admission fee and other funds from SC students in colleges affiliated to Punjabi University under post-matric scholarship scheme.
TET date postponed,to be held June 9
Chandigarh: The Punjab government has postponed the Teacher Eligibility Test and will now hold it on June 9 instead of May 26. The online registration for the test starts on April 17 and will continue till May 13. The admit cards would be uploaded on May 27.
Talwar is health advisor to govt
Chandigarh: Chairman of Medical Council of India K K Talwar has been appointed as the honorary advisor to the Punjab government for health and medical education. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has directed Principal Secretary of Health and Family Welfare and Medical Education and Research to immediately issue the formal order in this regard.
Gang making forged documents busted
Jalandhar: Jalandhar commissionerate police on Thursday busted a gang involved in preparing forged documents to help accused get bail in criminal cases. The gang had helped around 200 accused in getting bail. The police have recovered forged voter cards,government stamps and identity cards.
