Brar set to quit Cong, may join BJP

Brar is expected to make an announcement about his resignation at a press conference here Monday.

Former MP and Congress leader Jagmeet Singh Brar, who was suspended by the party for criticising AICC chief Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi five months ago, is set to resign from the Congress along with his brother and several supporters. Sources said he was likely to join the BJP soon.

Brar is expected to make an announcement about his resignation at a press conference here Monday. Sources said he would join the BJP either in Delhi or during BJP chief Amit Shah’s rally in Punjab.

Brar will put in his papers along with his younger brother Ripjit Singh Brar and several supporters, including Gurdas Girdhar, ex-DCC president of Muktsar, Vijay Sathi, Manjit Ghaseetpur and Manjeet Jhalbuti.

Punjab BJP leaders said Brar was directly in touch with national leaders. His joining the party would be a boon as the party needs a Sikh leader in the Malwa region, the sources said.

Talking to The Indian Express, Brar said he had been suspended for five months and that party had not taken any decision on him yet. “For now, I am just resigning from the Congress and not joining any other party. Things will unfold in the coming days. I am in touch with several leaders and encouraged by the response I have got from them,” he said.
