Even as 50 columns of the Army and 66 companies of central armed police forces have been deployed for tracking down militants belonging to the Songbijit faction of the NDFB which killed over 80 innocent people on December 23 in five simultaneous attacks, the Centre Friday extended Assam’s “disturbed area” status for one more year.

A notification issued by the Union Home Minister Friday extended the “disturbed area” status of Assam under provisions of Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958. The entire state of Assam was first declared as a “disturbed area” on November 27, 1990 when the ULFA was banned and the Army deployed to carry out counter-insurgency operations.

An official release said the notification extending the “disturbed area” status of Assam was issued after due consideration of the law and order situation in Assam due to the violent incidents caused by ULFA(I) and NDFB(S), as also GNLA, KPLT, UALA, NSCN(IM) and NSCN(K).

The Centre Friday also declared the area falling within 20 km of the inter-state border of Assam in Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh as “disturbed area” which facilitates the Army and other security forces deployed in Assam to go in hot pursuit of militants sneaking into adjoining states.

Meanwhile, top officers of security forces engaged in counter-insurgency operations in Assam resolved to initiate strong measures against the culprits involved in the recent violent attacks in the state.

Inmates leave camps

Meanwhile, more inmates of the relief camps set up in the wake of militant attacks on Adivasi villagers and a few incidents of retaliatory attacks have left for their respective villages, bringing the total number of inmates to 2,08,069 Friday.
