Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan found support from an unlikely quarter on Sunday with Shiv Sena praising him for initiating a probe into the irrigation scam.

Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray, who is otherwise inimical to Chavan, went to the extent of asking Congress not to replace the CM.

“I would like to congratulate Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan who inspite of the severe pressure put on him by both uncle and nephew (Sharad and Ajit Pawar) has initiated an inquiry into the irrgation scam,” he said.

“He has taken a courageous decision. Congress should not succumb to pressure and replace him before the inquiry is completed.”

The 45 Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation employees against whom the probe has been ordered include former chief executive director D P Shirke. Activists who helped expose the scam claimed Shrike was close to former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and acted at his behest.
