A Hisar-based Dalit leader,Ved Pal Tanwar, was arrested by Hisar Police on charges of wrongful confinement and culpable homicide not amounting to murder on Thursday.
Suman (30),a resident of Jullana village, had gone to Tanwars farmhouse in Hisar to meet her parents. Tanwar has provided shelter to over 80 Dalit families, including Sumans parents, for the past two years.
According to the police,on Wednesday night,a poisonous snake bit Suman, following which she went into a semi-conscious state. However, instead of taking her to a hospital,Tanwar allegedly started using black-magic tricks, made her drink the juice of neem leaves and applied home-made ointments on the wound. Suman, finally succumbed to the snake bite,on Thursday morning.
Sumans husband,Krishan, who reached the farm house on Thursday, took the body to the Hisar Civil Hospital, for post mortem. The doctors stated that the woman died of snake bite, but had she been administered with medicines at the right time, she could have survived.
Krishan lodged a written complaint with the police, following which we arrested Tanwar. The accused, before his arrest, tried to instigate the victims family members to keep the body in the middle of a road and demand compensation from the government, said ASI Harish Bhardwaj.
