‘Fix LPG subsidy, issue cheques for it’

Amid widespread opposition to restricting subsidised LPG to six cylinders per family per year,Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said on Friday subsidies should be fixed and BPL and APL consumers should be given cheques for the amounts.

Amid widespread opposition to restricting subsidised LPG to six cylinders per family per year,Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said on Friday subsidies should be fixed and BPL and APL consumers should be given cheques for the amounts.

The suggestion is similar to a pilot project launched by the Centre to credit subsidy amounts directly to bank accounts of beneficiaries.

“The subsidy rate should be fixed and cheques be given to BPL and APL categories. This is easily possible because all data are available for LPG consumers. It is being done in some measure for kerosene consumers,” said Chavan.

He agreed with the Nationalist Congress Party demand that Tatas and Birla should not get the benefit of subsidized LPG and said income-tax payers should not be given LPG subsidy. Chavan said tax payers should be asked to file affidavits and action taken against violators.

Maharashtra has 1.71 crore (almost 85 per cent of the population) LPG consumers who use 12 crore cylinders.

Opposition parties had called a bandh on Thursday protesting diesel price hike and the LPG restriction.

The Centre has asked Congress-ruled states to extend the LPG limit from six to nine cylinders.bsidised LPG to six cylinders per family per year,Chavan said on Friday subsidies should be fixed and BPL and APL consumers should be given cheques for the amounts.
