Convicted constable dismissed from service

The Punjab government filed an affidavit in the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday,in which,it stated that a Barnala head constable,who had been sentenced to 10 years for rape,was now dismissed from service.

During the resumed hearing of a public interest litigation seeking removal of convicted police officials, the government submitted that constable Angrez Singh was now dismissed from service.

The PIL had brought it to the notice of the Court,that Singh was convicted of rape and had been sentenced to ten years in prison. He was,then dismissed. His appeal against dismissal order was also rejected. In his criminal appeal,the High Court maintained the conviction,but reduced his sentence to the period of imprisonment,which he had already served.

Angrez Singh filed a revision before the departmental authority,upon which,he was reinstated and taken back into service as a constable. The Court had then issued notices over convicted police officials being reinstated. On Friday,Punjabsubmitted that no such officers were still in service.

Frame rules for speed governors: HC

CHANDIGARH: THE Punjab and Haryana HC on Friday directed Punjab and Haryana to frame rules and constitute a special committee by November 2 to check tampering with speed governors in transport vehicles. The HC also directed the states to impose a penalty on buses,which enter the states and do not have speed governors.
