After keeping Opposition at bay, creates rift between allies BJP and HJC

In the war of attrition played out in the Haryana Assembly during its three-day monsoon session, only ruling Congress seems to have come out with flying colours — charges of not playing by the democratic norms notwithstanding.

The Treasury bench effectively managed to thwart any attempt by the Opposition to corner it on issues ranging from Geetika Sharma suicide case in which former minister Gopal Goyal Kanda has been made an accused, the case related to police firing at farmers protesting against land acquisition and the sexual abuse of inmates of ,a shelter home in Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s home district Rohtak.

If anything,it even tried to create a rift between alliance partners BJP and the Kuldeep Bishnoi-led Haryana Janhit Congress by constantly accusing the saffron party of being sympathetic towards the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).

The brief session saw repeated adjournments, chaos, walkouts and touched a low when the main opposition INLD (31 MLAs) was suspended on the second day for the remaining session after the party leader Abhey Singh Chautala passed some casteist remark against a member and his father and former chief minister Om Prakash Chautala “cast aspersions on the Chair”.

Even as INLD held a mock session outside the Assembly,in the House,BJP Legislative Party Leader Anil Vij pleaded that they be called back “for the sake of democratic process.”

This prompted Parliamentary Affairs Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala,to ask Vij: “Have you switched over to the INLD?.” Even Speaker Kuldeep Sharma asked Vij whether he had the INLD’s mandate to talk on their behalf.

Now even as Haryana BJP chief Krishan Pal Gurjar is claiming that the stand taken by Vij has not created any divide between the alliance partners, the INLD,on the other hand has sent out feelers to the saffron party saying it is open to “any possibilities before the elections”.

“Nothing is impossible in the politics. For us only the Congress is untouchable,” INLD general secretary Ajay Singh Chautala told the Indian Express.

However,he added, that a possibility can emerge only if “the BJP snaps ties with the HJC.”

Meanwhile,Vij claims that “Surjewala and other Congress leaders are reading too much between the lines.”

“Our decision to ally with the HJC was taken by the party high command and we accept it. Our alliance alliance remains firm,” he said, adding that he supported the INLD in the House as their “assertion was genuine.”

For the records, with the BJP joining hands with the HJC,it is the latter that has benefited with victories Hisar Lok Sabha and Adampur assembly bypoll.

The saffron party had shared power with the Chautalas on two earlier occasions, but parted ways before the 2005 Assembly elections in the state.
