As counting of votes ended for elections to the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC),the Sena-BJP-RPI alliance and the Congress-NCP ended with a narrow gap of three seats. Though Congress and NCP fought the elections separately, they are most likely to jointly stake claim to the mayors post, along with the support of Independents.
After the counting,BJP ended with 29 seats and emerged as the single largest party. Sena won 14 seats. The Congress won 19 seats,NCP won 27 seats,MNS one and three seats were picked up by smaller parties. One independent candidate won too.
The current reigning Congress is likely to retain its hold over the corporation with support of independents.
Elections to 95 seats were held on Sunday in a peaceful manner with 52 per cent voting registered.
Congress has lost significant number of seats (down from 33 to 19) in this election, which has been its stronghold for many years. Meanwhile,NCP increased its tally from 20 to 27 in this election. BJP has gained the most in this by increasing their tally from 11 to 29.
