Friends and family members of a madrasa teacher and a van driver allegedly assaulted by suspected gau rakshaks in outer Delhi’s Kanjhawala area Thursday claimed the attackers were probably looking for the “right time” to target them.
The MLA of the constituency (Kirari), AAP’s Rituraj Govind, said some people had tried to create tension last year during the animal sacrifice rituals and he had requested the police to make proper arrangements for Bakrid this year.
“The activities were conducted Tuesday and Wednesday, with the deployment of police around the madrasa. It seems the attackers were waiting for us to come out to dump the discarded remains of the animals sacrificed,” added Iqram.
Mohammad Islam, a member of the madrasa, said the discarded remains are usually dumped or buried. “Last year, we had taken the remains to a ‘khatta’ (dumping ground) near Rani Khera village in Kanjhawala area. This year, the attackers seemed like they were waiting for the right time. They chased our vehicle and targeted us,” he added.
“We did not take the main route because the remains give off foul smell and were using a path in between the agricultural land towards Rani Khera,” said Islam. He added they would request the government to provide a specific location where they could dispose of the discarded remains of animals sacrificed.
DCP (outer) Vikramjit Singh said the tempo in which the animal remains were being carried was seized and the contents were dumped by a police team. “Since the matter is being investigated, I cannot comment on it. We will verify all the facts,” he added. Police have arrested four persons and more persons may be held in the case, said Singh.
MLA Govind said, “This year, I met police officers and they made the deployment at various places during the festival. All events went off well, but this unfortunate incident took place.” He added there was no specific ‘khatta’ for disposing of discarded animal remains and work would be done on this.
