When news broke that popular Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi, who has been an avowed supporter of the BJP in the last few years, has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha under the arts category, surprisingly there were no big murmurs in the local media in Kerala. That’s perhaps because it was always known that there was something big in store for the actor ever since he declined to contest on a BJP ticket from the Thiruvananthapuram Assembly constituency.

Local leaders of the BJP in the state were reportedly keen on fielding the actor from the prestigious seat given they fancy his chances there. But the actor politely refused. Quite clearly, there were bigger dreams to chase.

And when news came of his Rajya Sabha nomination, Gopi was quick to clarify that the decision of the Narendra Modi-led government should not be seen as ‘political’. At the same time, he promised that he would campaign for the party in as many Assembly constituencies he can cover in Kerala.

While people would indeed have no qualms about his nomination to the Upper House as an actor given his accomplished and seasoned stint in Malayalam films, the roles he played in some of those films gave him away.

Gopi has always been known as an ‘action hero’ in Malayalam, most notably for his portrayal of honest and committed police officers swinging the baton against the system. In his films, he came across as ‘the man against the world’, revealing corruption scandals and the dark underbelly of electoral politics.

But unfortunately, it’s a video of one of those trademark scenes from his film where he rants against politicians for taking the back-door to Parliament (read Rajya Sabha) that’s gone viral in social media and Kerala’s many television satires now. In the scene, Gopi is seen menacingly circling his villain and telling him that people like him take the Rajya Sabha route because they are afraid of facing the public and winning a popular vote.

“People like you who are NRI gods and liquor barons pump wads of black money to capture such distinguished posts,” Gopi is seen telling the villain.

The video has been making rapid rounds on social media and even made it into an episode of a news show popular for its hard-hitting satire. Gopi’s skills as an actor may have won him accolades, but clearly his plunge into politics has not been a smooth one.
