Pak delegation ‘barred’ from meeting prisoners in Jaipur jail

Sarvar Khan, Inspector General of Police, Jaipur Central Jail, however, rubbished the allegations.

A Pakistani delegation was allegedly denied ‘consular access’ to Pakistani prisoners lodged in Jaipur Central Jail despite having permission from the Ministry of External Affairs.

Officials with the Pakistan Embassy in India told The Indian Express that on February 25, when the delegation visited Jaipur to meet the Pakistani prisoners, “which also includes Pakistani fishermen, minors and women”, they were stopped.

Sarvar Khan, Inspector General of Police, Jaipur Central Jail, however, rubbished the allegations. “The allegations are baseless. The delegation had arrived to meet five prisoners — two Hindus and three Muslims. However, the two Hindu prisoners were released sometime back. The other three are in détenu at Alwar and not Jaipur, and in police custody — not with the prisons (department) — and hence the delegation could not meet them.” He said the delegation has now scheduled another visit this month.

The Pakistan High Commission has requested MEA to investigate the matter “with the view to ensure that such lapse should not recur in future”.

“Pakistan has always facilitated Indian High Commission in Islamabad access to Indian prisoners in Pakistan,” said Manzoor Memon, Press Attaché with the Pakistani Embassy in India.
