Despite their film not getting clearance for screening at the festival, directors of the documentary Caste on the Menu Card participated in a discussion Saturday — the second day of the 12th Jeevika Asia Livelihood Documentary Festival 2015 — at Siri Fort. Ananyaa Gaur, Atul Anand and Anurup Khillare, who participated in the discussion, are among the five students from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) who made the documentary. The discussion which was moderated by festival director Manoj Mathew.
Caste on the Menu Card was scheduled to be screened on October 31, but the Information & Broadcasting Ministry refused to exempt it from certification, said Centre for Civil Society, which is organising the festival.

Students said they made the film after induction cookers were removed from hostel rooms at TISS because the staff was informed students were cooking beef and pork in their rooms. Talking about what they learnt during the making of the film, Khillare said, “Those who deal with the processing of leather belong to the marginalised community… but once it is processed, the benefits are enjoyed by upper caste and upper class.”
“We interviewed a cow therapist and became aware of the notions people associate with beef eating, like people who eat beef will get HIV/AIDS and high blood pressure,” said Gaur.
The movie has been uploaded on YouTube and will be screened Sunday at 09.30 pm at Sabarmati Hostel lawns in JNU.
