Misa Bharti’s RS nomination: Lalu Yadav emulates DMK model of power sharing in family

Misa Bharti is now into "outer Ring Road of power" and RJD also follows DMK model of power distribution for family at two layers of Centre and state politics.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s eldest daughter Misa Bharti had always been politically active in the family since Lalu Prasad had taken over as Bihar chief minister in 1990. Though in her teens then, she followed her father keenly. It was only a matter of time for her to take to active politics. Just when time would have been ripe for her to enter politics, it was Nitish Kumar who held sway in Bihar politics, relegating Lalu Prasad to near oblivion.

Misa gave herself a chance in 2014 Lok Sabha elections. But this time, she came across two odds – the Narendra Modi wave and a sulking opponent from her party, Ram Kripal Yadav, who enjoys a big grass root connect in Pataliputra constituency – the arena of showdown between estranged uncle and niece. Misa lost narrowly. She cried in private but remained calm and collected in public.

There was buzz around her again when Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar joined before the Bihar Assembly elections. On count of being eldest child of Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi, she could have been the obvious and easy pick for the post of deputy CM. But her two brothers – Tej Pratap and Tejashwi – emerged as heir of the RJD boss and Misa had to silently give into wishes of her family amidst some acrimony behind doors. Misa settled with the reality of not being the “main Ring Road of power” in her family in succession battle. She waited and waited and off and on dropped her name for party state president post, just to keep family and others reminding about her compensation in family power battle.

Even the Rajya Sabha berth was hard-fought for Misa. This time, her rival was her mother. But Lalu Prasad called the shots to nominate his eldest daughter Misa to balance the power equation among siblings. Her brothers also supported her case. Misa is now into “outer Ring Road of power” and RJD also follows DMK model of power distribution for family at two layers of Centre and state politics. Misa, who has been savvy with social media and tweets regularly, now waits to make her presence among elders. She would have liked to begin her political innings from Lok Sabha or state politics, she had no option but to turn “elder” for sake of her politics.
