He will take over the position from Bupinder Zutshi.

Kumar, who did his MPhil and PhD from the School of Environmental Sciences from 1988-95, will take charge from Monday. “I had appeared for the interview on March 16 and was informed on Friday by post that I had been selected. I have already completed my formalities and will be joining from Monday,” he said.

On being asked about the controversy in JNU, he said, “I have been reading about the incident, but as of now I don’t have much idea about it”.

Kumar added, “Let me take over from Monday… for now, all I can say is that people should abide by rules and regulations.”

Outgoing Registrar Zutshi was in the news during the controversy, with both the JNU Teachers’ Association and the JNU Students’ Union asking for his removal for several reasons, including allowing police into the campus.

The JNUTA had even passed a resolution “de-recognising” him. The association had said that Zutshi had crossed the age of 62 and could no longer hold the post.
