The Jammu and Kashmir Police appealed for peace and calm in the Valley on Saturday after eight persons died and many others were injured in clashes between security forces and stone pelters following the encounter of Hizbul Mujahideen Commander Burhan Wani on Friday.
In a press conference, J&K Police said it’s very unfortunate that young lives were lost in clashes. “We certainly don’t want to kill youngsters of our own society, says J&K Police ADGP on gunning down of Hizbul militant Burhan Wani in encounter, adding that the situation is particularly bad in south Kashmir.

At least 96 security personnel were among the injured while tackling the protesters, said police. Over 20 police camps were attacked by mobs, who allegedly looted weapons from the police station and used them to fire on security personnel, said Inspector General of Police in Kashmir Javid Gilani. He added that police acted with restraint in such a situation.

Meanwhile, people turned up in large numbers for the funeral prayers of Burhan Wani, the 22-year-old poster boy of militancy in Kashmir who was gunned down by security forces in an operation Friday. Wani, who was the commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen, will be laid to rest in his home town of Tral in Pulwama district.
Wani was shot dead along with two other militants in Bumdoora village, 85 km south of Kashmir. Officials said Burhan was shot dead during a joint operation launched at around 4.30 pm by the Special Operation Group of J&K police and 19 Rashtriya Rifles in the Kokernag area of South Kashmir.
