Indian Navy new ship: The Indian Navy will formally commission the INS Ikshak into its fleet at the Naval Base in Kochi on Thursday. This is the third vessel of the Survey Vessel (Large) [SVL] class and the first to be based at the Southern Naval Command.

The commissioning ceremony will be held in the presence of Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, the Chief of the Naval Staff.

1) What does INS Ikshak stand for?

According to Ministry of Defence, the name ‘Ikshak’, means ‘Guide’ in Sanskrit which defines “the ship’s role as a sentinel of precision and purpose”.

2) What is it made of?

Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd, Kolkata, INS Ikshak is equipped with state-of-the-art hydrographic and oceanographic equipment, including a high-resolution multi-beam echo sounder, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), and four Survey Motor Boats (SMBs). The ship is also attached with a helicopter deck, extending its operational reach and enabling multi-domain missions.

3) How much of it is indigenous?

The vessel embodies over 80% indigenous content, says Defence Ministry, underscoring the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and collaborative synergy between GRSE and Indian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

4) What will Ikshak do?

According to Defence Ministry, the vessel is designed to undertake full-scale coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys of ports, harbours, and navigational channels.
