In contrast, restricted holidays are optional and offer employees the flexibility to choose based on personal preferences, religious beliefs, or cultural significance. The applicability of restricted holidays may vary depending on the institution, organization, or state policies.

The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions, which oversees this process, has detailed 17 gazetted holidays and 34 restricted holidays in its circular.
