Fresh norms for AYUSH centres to ‘extend quality health service’

The AYUSH standards list the minimum requirements for beds based on the population and the minimum requirement for personnel in the health centres

The Union Ministry of Health released Monday the norms AYUSH healthcare centres in the country will have to follow in terms of infrastructure, human resource, and availability of medicine.

By adopting the ‘Indian Public Health Standards for AYUSH’ the states and Union Territories will be able to extend quality AYUSH health care services, the Government said in a statement.

“The fundamental aim is to augment preventive, promotive, curative, palliative, and rehabilitative services within the public health domain,” it said.

Similar norms for allopathic healthcare centres already exist. The AYUSH standards list the minimum requirements for beds based on the population and the minimum requirement for personnel in the health centres. It says there should be at least 10 AYUSH beds per 50,000 population, 30 beds per 1.5 lakh population, and 50 per 2.5 lakh population.

The standards also create an essential drugs list for different levels of health centres and for different streams of AYUSH.
