Eid-ul-Fitr 2024, Moon Sighting Today: The crescent moon was sighted on Wednesday, marking the beginning of Eid celebrations in India.

Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the culmination of the fasting month of Ramzan, will be celebrated in the country on Thursday as the moon was sighted this evening.

Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated across the world on different days and it is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon which is supposed to denote the start of the Shawwal month in the lunar Islamic calendar.

Chand Raat is a term used in South Asian cultures, particularly in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, to denote the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr or Eid al-Adha. The term is derived from Urdu, where “chand” means moon and “raat” means night, thus translating to the night when the moon is sighted.

In essence, the sighting of the Eid moon is a time for celebration, unity, and reflection. It is an occasion that brings people together, fosters a sense of spiritual solidarity, and serves as a reminder of the importance of tradition and the preservation of Islamic customs.

Eid was, however, celebrated across Kerala and in Leh and Kargil Wednesday. Muslim clerics in Kerala including Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, Jifri Muthukkoya Thangal and Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar had earlier said the Shawwal moon was sighted and so Eid will be celebrated across the state on Wednesday.
