The University of Pune (UoP) has set up a committee to review perks and allowances that varsity officials receive apart from their salaries. The decision to set up the three-member committee was taken after a few members of the management council said the university needed to review officials’ allowances.

The committee will look into the allowances of all Class I officers, including registrar, deputy registrars, assistant registrars, director of Board of College and University Development and Controller of Examination.

Speaking about the decision, one of the members,on the condition of anonymity, said,“There are many officials in the university whose allowances,at times, equal their salaries. These officials receive honorariums for attending different meetings and for being a part of different committees. Nobody knows how much these officials are supposed to get. This issue was raised at the meeting, following which the decision of forming a committee was taken.”

Close to 60 officials will be a part of the probe. Elaborating on the initiative,Vice-Chancellor Wasudev Gade said,“Our Class I officials get allowances from the varsity. There was a suggestion from the management council to review the allowances of these officials. The committee will be ready with the report by June-end.”

Officials need to deposit receipts of these honorariums to the finance department. However, the amount demanded is never verified by the department. The aim of the committee will be to see if the amounts being demanded are justified.
