The Student For Society group organised a protest at the PEC University of Technology on the issue of year back of around 30 students this year and no hearing of their requests made to the institute authorities. They claimed that all these backs were not due to weak academic performance of students but due to the implementation of irrational, arbitrary anti student academic rules.
Recently, the institute changed the rules for promoting a student adding two more conditions to the existing one. This three-point condition includes students to have minimum five Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA),students must not have more than two backlogs i.e. for first year, out of eleven subjects one has to clear a minimum of nine subjects and if any student fails to fulfil any one of above described conditions,he/she will get a year back and even some termination.
Pradeep Singh, the president of Student For Society (SFS) said,Regarding this matter,we gave representations and request letters to all concerned authorities. Around 20 such students met Dean Academic Affairs Sanjeev Sofat and requested him to reconsider this issue in the Senate. But like always he rejected our request outright and shouted at us. This adamant behaviour of PEC management has forced us to go in a democratic demonstration.
Sanjeev Sofat said,We go by rules which states that if a student fails to clear the minimum set criteria,he would not be promoted to the senior class. These rules are there since 2009 and no recent change has been made to them. Not only do we explain these rules to freshers during the orientation programmes but these are also available on the official website.
They protested in front of administrative block of the college with slogans against the management . SFS declared a day and night dharna if the management did not accept their demands.
