Omar wants expert committee to improve literacy in Budgam district

The Chief Minister announced additional funds worth about Rs four crores for various sectors in Kupwara

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has directed that an expert committee be formed to look into the reasons for low literacy rate in Budgam district of central Kashmir,an official spokesman said here today.

Omar issued the directions for constitution of the expert committee during a district development board meeting for Budgam held in the district yesterday,he said.

According to the spokesman,Omar said the committee shall carry out a survey and formulate a comprehensive report for improving the literacy rate in the district.

Although Budgam district is located very close to Srinagar,the summer capital of the state,its literacy rate of 39 per cent is the lowest in the state. The overall literacy rate of Jammu and Kashmir is 70 per cent.

Omar,however,lauded the Budgam district administration for executing various development works during the recent summer unrest despite various constraints and directed them to ensure “quality oriented performance” in the assigned targets,the spokesman said.

He said the Chief Minister sanctioned additional funds to the extent of Rs 3.33 crore in various sectors of which Rs one crore was sanctioned for laying high and low tension power lines in far flung and neglected areas of the district.

Omar also chaired the District Development Board meeting for Kupwara. He directed the Kupwara district administration to mobilise all the resources to ensure that the targets of development works are accomplished within the next three and a half months,the spokesman said.

The Chief Minister also directed the administration to consider deficiencies pointed out by NAPCOM so that all the criteria are fulfilled while executing the works.
