Medical admissions in Tamil Nadu are likely to be hit with the Medical Council Of India yet to approve the state government’s proposals to start six medical colleges including three by the government, besides plans to increase the number of seats in the two government and three private colleges in the state. Assessment teams deputed by MCI have not approved the Tamil Nadu government’s proposals to start its own medical colleges at Theni,Tiruvarur and Sivaganga and three self-financing medical colleges, according to officials.
The teams had also rejected the state government’s request to increase the number of seats at Madras and Stanley medical colleges besides the self-financing colleges of Sree Balaji Medical College,Raja Muthiah Medical College,Chidambaram, and Sri Ramachandra Medical college and Research institute.
The MCI’s hesitation in giving permission to start new medical colleges and increase the number of seats would adversely hit admission process, slated to start on July one. However, officials are hopeful of getting MCI permission
to start at least two new medical colleges in the state in the government sector.
The government is in a tight spot with some self-financing colleges including the D D Medical college,a minority institution, declining to surrender 50 per cent of the seats to government quota, citing a Supreme court judgment.
The MCI has not given permission to the D D Medical college to increase the number of seats from 150 to 250 though the assessment team had cleared the proposals. Adding to government’s woes,MCI has withheld permission for admission of students in three self-financing colleges on the plea that some teaching staff have been shown to be working in more than one medical college.
More than 50,000 applicants are seeking admission in government and private colleges with the total seats in government colleges being 1553 and 1470 in the latter. With as many as 66 students, who had scored 200 out of 200 in Physics,Chemistry and Biology in the plus two exams, ranking would be done as per their age,Health Minister Dr Vijay had said recently.
