The School Education department has asked Mumbai-based Antonio De Souza High School and Sacred Heart High School to implement its March 2012 GR setting a minimum marks criteria for awarding grace marks, from the next academic year. This comes after parents alleged that a large number of students of Class IX were detained intentionally.
The education inspector will conduct an inquiry into the allegations and officials will visit the two schools on Friday to examine their records.
Parents of 150 students of Antonio De Souza High School,Byculla, had alleged that the school intentionally detained their children in Class IX. Similar complaints were made by students of Sacred Heart High School in which 79 students failed.
A meeting to discuss the complaints was held with School Education Minister Rajendra Darda and other officials. Darda said the situation seems to have emerged due to implementation of the March 2012 Government Resolution (GR) regarding award of grace marks to students in the final examination marks. Students may have fallen short of the requirement for getting grace marks.
He said if the need arises there would be a revaluation of papers of the students.
Principal Secretary, school education,J S Saharia said that they had asked the schools to implement the GR from the next academic year and therefore correct the records.
We have told schools to implement the GR from the next academic year. With this,if students clear the examination and can be promoted, there will not be any problem. We will wait for the report from the schools after they take necessary action, said Saharia.
Meanwhile,an inquiry has been initiated against the two schools in the matter. We will investigate both matters (Antonio De Souza High School and Sacred Heart High School). The inquiry into Sacred Heart matter has already been initiated. As far as Antonio De Souza High School is concerned,we will start the inquiry on Friday after the school gives us the office records, said B Mane, education inspector,South zone.
