Dipak Majumder sworn in as MLA after winning Tripura Assembly bypoll

The Ramnagar seat, where the election was held on April 19 along with the Lok Sabha polls, fell vacant after then MLA Surajit Dutta died in December 2023

Majumder, who was the Agartala mayor, had switched over from the Congress to the BJP before the 2018 Assembly elections.

Dipak Majumder, who won the Assembly bypoll to Tripura’s Ramnagar seat, was sworn in as an MLA on Wednesday as Speaker Biswabandhu Sen administered the oath of secrecy to him.

“Our Agartala Municipal Corporation mayor won the bypoll in the Ramnagar constituency and took oath as a member of the Assembly. I welcome him and we expect the Assembly will see more prosperity with his assistance,” Chief Minister Manik Saha said.

The Ramnagar seat, where the bypoll was held on April 19 along with the Lok Sabha election in West Tripura, fell vacant after then MLA Surajit Dutta died in December 2023.

Majumder, who was the Agartala mayor, had switched over from the Congress to the BJP before the 2018 Assembly elections. He contested the 2013 Assembly elections in the Khowai constituency but was defeated.

“I will try to discharge my responsibility as an MLA effectively. This is a new chapter for me. I am also thankful to the people who supported me,” he said.

Ministers including Pranajit Singha Roy, Sushanta Chowdhury and Tinku Roy, Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul and Agartala Municipal Corporation councillor Ratna Datta were among those who attended the swearing-in ceremony. Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman congratulated Majumder after the ceremony.

With the induction of Majumder, the ruling BJP has 33 MLAs in the 60-member Assembly. The TIPRA Motha party, which is a BJP ally, has 13 legislators while another ally, the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura, has got an MLA.

The Opposition CPM and Congress have got 10 and three MLAs, respectively.
