Adopting energy efficient measures, renewable energy solutions and advanced technologies could annually save Rs 37 crore in energy costs and 1,36,581 tonnes of CO2 emissions for 66 units across 7 key Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) clusters, a study has found.

The study, released Friday, was conducted on decarbonisation in the MSME sector by the Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP).

Decarbonisation refers to the reduction or elimination of carbon dioxide emissions.

Even as there are potential cost and CO2 reduction benefits, it would need an initial investment of Rs 90 crore across these clusters, the study said.

The study was conducted across units in Alathur, Asansol-Chirkunda, Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, Coimbatore, Ludhiana and Tiruppur.

It covered energy and emission intensive sectors such as pharmaceuticals, refractories, aluminium die-casting, bakeries and textiles units across these clusters.
