Watch | Trees uprooted, power lines snapped as Cyclone Dana hits Odisha and West Bengal coasts

As Cyclone Dana roared ashore on Thursday, unleashing windstorms and heavy rains across parts of West Bengal and Odisha’s coastal regions leaving destruction in its path. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone is centred over northern coastal Odisha, near Dhamara and Bhitarkanika’s Habalikhati nature camp.

The IMD’s bulletin at 8:23 AM confirmed that the landfall process is ongoing, with the cyclone’s rear moving northwesternwards with a speed of 10 kmph and lying centred near latitude 21.25 degrees N and longitude 86.70 degrees E at 09:30 AM today, over the north coastal Odisha.

It is likely to move northwestwards across north Odisha and weaken gradually into a deep depression in the next 06 hours.

Paradip’s Doppler radar closely monitors the situation as heavy rains and gusty winds continue to batter the region.

Bhadrak district has seen extensive tree uprooting and road blockages due to the storm, which also damaged electrical installations.

Several parts of Kolkata were waterlogged following heavy rainfall.

Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari reported on Thursday that the cyclone is likely to affect about 10 districts which also consist of 2,131 villages and 12 municipalities. More than 377,000 people have been transported to about 7,300 relief sites in addition to 6,454 domestic animals that have been relocated so far, with medical and veterinary assistance offered to the victims.

Chandabali in Bhadrak recorded the highest rainfall of 131.6 mm within six hours, followed by Balasore’s 42.8 mm.

Schools and colleges in affected areas of both states will remain closed until October 26, while Bhubaneswar Airport has resumed flights after a temporary suspension.
