Preparations for the Cyclone Biparjoy were made well in advance and over 1 lakh people were evacuated from eight districts, said relief commissioner Pandey. (Express/Nirmal Harindran) As Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall on the coast of Kutch district in Gujarat Thursday night, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel held a high-level meeting at the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) in Gandhinagar to take stock of the situation and damages sustained. Giving out details of the meeting, Relief Commissioner Alok Pandey stated that no person has died due to the cyclone in the state.
Quoting Pandey, an official release stated that major casualties were averted as preparations for the cyclone were made well in advance and over 1 lakh people were evacuated from eight districts. He added that the evacuation operation could be among the biggest in the state’s history.
Pandey said the chief minister took details of the situation in each district while also giving instructions to fix the affected water supply, communication system, power supply and road damages. Patel also instructed officials to prepare a primary estimate of the damages and start the process of paying cash doles and rendering other financial assistance to the people affected.
Pandey said that owing to the cyclone, 1,137 trees have fallen and 263 roads were closed. All the trees have been removed and 260 roads have been made functional for vehicular traffic. Work is underway on the three other roads.
The release also stated that 5,120 electricity poles had fallen. resulting in power outage in 4,600 villages. Out of them, electricity supply has been re-established in 3,580 villages. And teams of Pashchim Gujarat Vij Corporation Limited (PGVCL) are working hard to re-establish power in the remaining villages.
Pandey also said that in the affected districts, 20 kutcha houses, nine pucca houses and 65 huts were completely damaged, whereas, 474 kutcha houses and two pucca houses suffered partial damages.
The release stated that as per the forecast of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the districts of Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Patan and Banaskantha are likely to receive heavy rainfall by the time Cyclone Biparjoy crosses Gujarat on Friday evening.
On Thursday and early Friday morning, rain lashed 171 talukas out of the 255 in the state. Earlier on Friday, the IMD said the severe cyclonic storm is “very likely to move nearly northeastwards and weaken gradually into a cyclonic storm over Saurashtra and Kutch around noon and subsequently into a deep depression around June 16 evening.”
