(File photo)A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan lost his leg and another suffered a serious eye injury in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast while they were taking part in an anti-Maoist operation in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district.
The incident took place at around 10.30 am on Thursday near Malwahi in Dantewada, close to the large unsurveyed Maoist stronghold of Abujhmad. Security personnel from the CRPF’s Battalion 195 had set out from their police camp towards Malwahi on an area domination exercise.
Constable Alam Munesh (33), who was part of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), was walking ahead with a sniffer dog, followed by 41-year-old Inspector Diwan Singh Gurjar.
However, a pressure IED had been planted inside the jungle, around 50-100 metres from the road ahead of the small Satdhar bridge. Munesh stepped on the pressure IED, triggering the blast. He severely injured his leg, while Diwan suffered splinter injuries to his face and eye. Both were airlifted to a hospital in Raipur.
Police sources said Munesh’s left leg had to be amputated while Gurjar is being moved to AIIMS Delhi for eye surgery.
Security forces have detected over 1,000 IEDs since 2024. Anti-Maoist operations in the Bastar region, which includes Dantewada, were stepped up in 2024 with the aim of eradicating Left Wing Extremism from Chhattisgarh by March 2026 — a deadline set by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah. In the last two years, more than 460 Maoists have been gunned down in encounters.
In the same period, 39 security personnel and 107 civilians have also been killed in Maoist-related violence.
