BJP alleged on Wednesday that the UPA government was “in a hurry” to withdraw the Red Corner Notice (RCN) against Bofors scam accused Ottavio Quattrocchi to permit him to travel so that he could access his illegal money lying in tax havens and Swiss banks.
Referring to the withdrawal of RCN against Quottrocchi which would allow him to travel unhindered, party general secretary Arun Jaitley said,”This facility of travel has been provided to him so that he can access his money lying in tax havens. His presence would be required to operate these accounts.”
The CBI’s reported move, which comes in the midst of elections and when the Congress-led UPA government is on its last legs, has drawn criticism from the BJP and the Left parties.
“Quottrocchi’s travel is directly linked to his bank accounts. The UPA government was in a hurry to permit him to travel for this reason,” Jaitley said.
Quottrocchi, who is an Italian,is rumoured to be close to Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
BJP has pledged to bring back the Indian black money stashed in foreign banks and tax havens within 100 days of being voted to power. Quattrocchi is said to have taken kickbacks in the Rs 64 crore Bofors gun scam.
