Srinagar police deploys all-women squad to check crimes against women

Police have deployed all-women flying squad vehicles in coaching hubs to assist female students there.

In a bid to check increasing crime against women in Srinagar, police have decided to deploy woman police flying squads at sensitive areas in the city.

“As a part of counter measure, to put check on crime against women, police have taken the step of deploying all-women police flying squad for assistance at various sensitive places,” said police spokesperson Manoj Kumar.

He said that police have also deployed squads in the city areas known for coaching centres. “To begin with police have deployed all-women police flying squad vehicles in coaching hub of Parraypora and Baghat areas to assist girl students in the area,” he said, adding that the squads will be put in places at other sensitive places as well.

The spokesperson has also asked the students to take help of the nearby police personnel.

“In case of stalking, harassment, teasing or any unwarranted advances by delinquents, the girl students are requested to contact nearby female police personnel for instant assistance,” he said.

According to the police officials, this step to deploy all-women flying squads was initiated as some victims feel “uncomfortable to talk on such sensitive issues with opposite gender”.

The valley has seen an increase in crimes against women. In a recent case, on December 11, last year a 21-year-old girl suffered severe burn injuries on her face, when two unknown men threw acid on the girl in the city outskirts. The girl is undergoing treatment in Chennai.
