Twenty-three years after a Deupty Superintendent of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) was caught in a disproportionate asset case,the special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court today convicted him and sentenced him to three-year imprisonment.
According to special public prosecutor Kiran Makasare,the ONGC officer I P Shankaran was caught in a bribery case in 1989 and the investigation revealed that he had amassed over Rs 23 lakh which was disproportionate to his known sources of income.
Makasare said that Shankaran took favours for doing or not doing some work and amassed the money. The CBI examined 11 witnesses in the case.
The court sentenced Shankaran to three-year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs one lakh.
The court,however,also immediately granted him bail and suspended his sentence to enable him to approach the high court.
