Congress workers staged a demonstration outside the Rajasthan Assembly on Monday, protesting against state minister Avinash Gehlot’s remarks about former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Police intervened, setting up barricades to prevent the protesters from marching toward the assembly premises. Among those leading the protest were MPs Harish Meena and Murari Meena, former minister BD Kalla, and several other senior Congress leaders. Gehlot’s remarks, made last Friday, sparked a political storm, prompting Congress leaders to stage a sit-in inside the assembly. The Rajasthan Assembly continued to witness disruptions on Monday, with repeated adjournments due to protests over Gehlot’s statement and the suspension of six Congress MLAs. During Friday’s Question Hour, Gehlot had pointed at the opposition and remarked, “As always, you named the working women’s hostel scheme in the 2023-24 budget after your ‘dadi’ (grandmother) Indira Gandhi.” This comment led to uproar in the House, resulting in three adjournments and the suspension of six Congress MLAs, including PCC chief Govind Singh Dotasara. On Monday, as the House convened, slogan-shouting Congress members continued their protest. The Speaker asked the suspended MLAs to leave, but they refused, leading to multiple adjournments. Despite repeated calls for order, the stalemate persisted, with marshals being summoned to remove the suspended members, who remained defiant. The political deadlock in the Rajasthan Assembly shows no signs of easing, with Congress leaders vowing to continue their protest until their demands are met. (With PTI inputs)
