Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi VadraThe Congress is planning to nominate newly-elected MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to be the first speaker for the special debate on Constitution in Lok Sabha on Friday. Sources said that the decision was taken at a Congress Parliamentary Strategy Group meeting on Thursday evening in Delhi.
This will be Priyanka’s first speech in Parliament after she won the Wayanad bypolls.
A discussion is scheduled for both Houses of Parliament – Friday and Saturday (Lok Sabha), Monday and Tuesday (Rajya Sabha).
On Thursday evening, Congress MP and general secretary in charge (organization), KC Venugopal, said that the Congress is happy there will be a discussion on the Constitution in both Houses.
“Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge had written to the Speaker and Chairman respectively asking for a debate in Parliament on the Constitution in both Houses,” said Venugopal.
On December 2, a week-long standoff in Parliament came to an end as the government and the Opposition reached an agreement, which was reflected by the announcement of dates for a special discussion on the Constitution in both the Houses.
At a meeting of floor leaders of all parties, convened by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, both the government and the Opposition parties had agreed for a special discussion on the Constitution during the winter session.
The Congress had made the Constitution and the alleged threat to it a poll plank in the Lok Sabha polls this year, and had seen its seats jump to 99 in Lok Sabha.
