Over a dozen shops and a municipal building were damaged at Devprayag market after a cloudburst hit the area in Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand on Tuesday.

Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat tweeted that no life was lost in the incident. He has sought a detailed report from the district administration about the damage.

Devprayag Police Station Officer Mahipal Singh Rawat said shops were closed and there was no public movement on roads due to the ongoing Covid-19 curfew. State Disaster Response Force personnel launched a search operation after the incident.

According to district disaster management control room, the cloudburst occurred in the upper reaches of Devprayag around 5 pm, leading to rise in water flow in a seasonal rivulet (gadera). Heavy flow of water in the rivulet damaged the buildings and took the debris to Alaknanda, officials said.

Devprayag is the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers.
