86 Maoists from Chhattisgarh, including 20 women, surrender before Telangana Police

With this, the total number of Maoists who have laid down arms in Telangana's Bhadradri Kothagudem and Mulugu this year adds up to 224.

As many as 86 members of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) party, which operates out of Sukma and Bijapur districts in Chhattisgarh, surrendered before the Telangana Police in Bhadradri Kothagudem district Saturday. The surrendered Maoists, including 20 women cadre, were provided with an immediate cash assistance of Rs 25,000.

The development came even as Union Home Minister Amit Shah was visiting Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district on Saturday for a tribal cultural event, where he requested Maoists to drop their weapons and join the mainstream.

With this, the total number of Maoists who have surrendered before the police in Bhadradri Kothagudem and Mulugu this year adds up to 224.

The 86 who surrendered on Saturday include Maoist cadres of various formations, including four area committee members, five party members, eight from the Revolutionary People’s Committee (RPC), 27 RPC militia, 20 of the RPC Dandakaranya Adivasi Mazdoor Kisan Sangh (DAKMS/KMS), 13 RPC Chaitanya Natya Mandali (CNM) members and nine RPC Gram Raksha Dal (GRD) members.

“They decided to leave the violent path of Naxalism and lead a peaceful life with their family members and surrendered before the IGP Multi Zone-I in Kothagudem district today, after knowing about the welfare measures being taken up for the surrendered Maoists and also development of welfare schemes for tribal (Adivasi) people, provided under ‘Operation Cheyutha’ programme by Telangana Police Department,” a statement from the police said.

According to S Chandrasekhar Reddy, Inspector General of Police, Multi-Zone 1, the 224 surrended Maoists includes two divisional committee members, 10 area committee members and platform party committee members, 25 party members, 74 militia members, 23 RPC members, 41 DKMS/KMS members, 31 CNM members, one courier and 17 GRD members.

The officer told media persons that they decided to avail the benefits of Telangana Government’s surrender policy and other schemes in a bid to lead peaceful lives with their families.

The Telangana police department appealed to cadres who wished to surrender to contact their nearest police stations or senior district officials, either through their family members or in person.

The district police administration will always ensure that all kinds of benefits will be provided immediately for the livelihood and rehabilitation of the surrendered cadres, and top Maoist cadres from Telangana will be provided extra benefits for settling well in society, the statement added.
