Heavy rainfall continued to batter Chennai on Wednesday, leading to waterlogging and traffic congestion across the city. The Tamil Nadu government has already declared a public holiday for schools, colleges, and government offices in Chennai and the neighbouring districts of Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu for October 16.

What is IMD saying? According to the met department, the worst is yet to come, with rains expected to intensify today, before tapering off by October 18. The low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which has already caused havoc in Chennai and its neighbouring districts, is expected to strengthen into a depression as it moves towards the coast.

What has been the govt’s response? The state government has set up 931 relief centres, ensuring that food and medical care are available to those affected by the floods. The Greater Chennai Corporation has also deployed thousands of workers, pumps, and relief teams across the city.

Chennai Rain Live: Chennai and Tamil Nadu hit by extremely heavy rainfall, reservoir levels rise rapidly

Chennai and parts of Tamil Nadu experienced extremely heavy rainfall due to the onset of the Northeast Monsoon on Tuesday.

Key reservoirs in and around Chennai, including Cholavaram, Redhills, and Chembarambakkam, saw significant inflows, with Cholavaram receiving 302.6 mm of rain in a day.

The combined storage of six major reservoirs reached 41.61% capacity, with 5,502.17 million cubic feet (mcft) of water, up from 4,844.20 mcft the previous day.

A depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to cross the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh coast near Chennai by Thursday, bringing more rainfall. (PTI)

Chennai Rain Live: Rains cease in Chennai as relief efforts ramp up; free food in Amma canteens

Heavy rains subsided in most parts of northern Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, on Wednesday, bringing relief to the region. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced free food provision in Amma canteens in Chennai on October 16 and 17 to assist those affected by the rain.

Relief efforts are in full swing, with the Greater Chennai Corporation providing shelter and food to those displaced from low-lying areas.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that a depression over the Bay of Bengal, located southeast of Chennai and Puducherry, is expected to cross the north Tamil Nadu-South Andhra Pradesh coasts near Chennai by early morning on October 17. Intermittent heavy rains occurred on Tuesday but stopped late at night.

Chennai Rain Live: NDRF, State Disaster Response Force teams are on standby, says TN Dy CM Udhayanidhi

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Tuesday said NDRF and State Disaster Response teams are ready for deployment as Chennai and other parts of the state continue to witness rains.

The Deputy CM said that disaster response force teams of the state and Centre are on standby in 26 locations in Chennai and districts nearby. Also, 219 boats are ready for use for rain-related tasks in Chennai and other parts of the state.

He told reporters that relief centres are ready in as many as 300 locations in the city with capacity to accommodate 50 to 1,000 people.

Such centres have all basic amenities including food and water. (PTI)

Chennai Rain Live: Deputy CM Stalin confirms situation under control

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin also inspected the Integrated Control and Command Centre, in Chennai and informed about the situation and said that the highest rainfall around 6 cm was recorded in the Sholinganallur and Teynampet area of Chennai.

Speaking about the rain situation, Udhayanidhi Stalin said, " Around 5 cm average rainfall has been recorded in Chennai in the last 24 hours. Things are very much under control. The highest rainfall has been recorded in Sholinganallur and Teynampet area, around 6 cm. No power cuts were encountered in any area in Chennai." "Tree falling has been reported in around 8 areas and the team is already on duty to clear it. All the trees will be cleared in approximately one to one and a half hours after the rain has stopped. 26 teams from NDRF and SDRF have been readily positioned in Chennai and all the coastal areas. Out of 22 subways in Chennai, two subways have been flooded and the traffic has been closed," informed the Deputy CM. (ANI)
