‘BJP-RSS mindset is anti-Constitution, anti-Ambedkar,’ says Rahul Gandhi, demands Amit Shah’s resignation

Rahul Gandhi, present alongside Kharge, called out the BJP for attempting to distract from what he termed as "the main issue" — the Adani controversy.

A day after Home Minister Amit Shah accused the Congress of twisting his words, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi Thursday launched a scathing attack on Shah, demanding his resignation over controversial remarks allegedly made about Dr BR Ambedkar in Parliament.

Speaking at a press conference, Kharge described Shah’s comments as “tragic” and “factually incorrect,” accusing him of spreading lies about India’s first Law Minister and a principal architect of the Constitution. “First, he should probe the facts before making such statements. Then he can insult Nehru ji and Ambedkar. What he said about Nehru and Ambedkar is all lies. If I got a chance in Parliament, I would have spoken,” Kharge said.

BJP attempting to divert attention from Adani issue: Kharge

Kharge alleged that BJP’s attempts to divert attention from the Adani issue were deliberate. “Everyday, we have not been disturbing the House. We protested outside for 14 days to highlight the loot by Adani. Our attack was on that,” he said, linking the renewed confrontation in Parliament to attempts to suppress the opposition’s demand for accountability.

The tipping point, according to Kharge, was Shah’s statement during a debate on the Constitution. “He (Shah) said that if we had named God as many times as we named Ambedkar, we would be in heaven. This was condemnable,” he remarked. He further accused the BJP of handing over public resources such as ports and airports to the Adani Group.

‘We were peacefully protesting in line’

Kharge provided details of the protest march held by Congress MPs earlier in the day, which turned confrontational. “We were peacefully protesting in a line, but they stopped us at the Makar Dwar gate. To show their muscle power, they brought many male MPs. We had our female MPs with us, and they were also stopped,” Kharge said. He added that BJP MPs forcefully attacked Congress leaders, causing him to lose his balance. “I’m in no condition to push anyone. I couldn’t handle my balance, and I sat down. Now they are alleging we pushed them,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi, present alongside Kharge, called out the BJP for attempting to distract from what he termed as “the main issue” — the Adani controversy. “It started before the Parliament session with the US case on Adani ji. The whole time, the BJP tried to stop discussion on that. Their basic strategy was to subvert the issue,” Gandhi said.

He drew a link between the BJP’s conduct and its ideological roots. “The BJP-RSS thinking is anti-Constitution and anti-Ambedkar. They want to finish his legacy. Their minister showed their mindset in front of everyone. We said there should be an apology,” Gandhi declared. He said that Congress’s call for Shah’s resignation was not merely symbolic but a demand for accountability.

Priyanka Gandhi took lead in the movement: Kharge

Kharge accused Shah of attempting to twist the narrative to protect his image. “He had said that Kharge ji is twisting it to affect my image. He even asked the media to show his video prominently,” Kharge said.

Priyanka Gandhi took lead in the movement. We only have lady members with us, and they were all men. This kind of atmosphere created by BJP will not be tolerated,” Kharge said.
