5. Indian foreign policy discourse must recognise that developments in the neighbourhood are not just about Indian resolve, good will or strategy. India’s neighbours have politics of their own; these can’t be determined by Delhi.

The country’s per capita income tripled in a decade, and the World Bank estimates that over 25 million people were lifted out of poverty in the last 20 years.

Her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, played a crucial role in leading the country to independence from Pakistan in 1971. The impact of the liberation war, which she experienced firsthand, significantly shaped her political ideology. Following her father’s assassination in 1975, Hasina lived in exile for several years, returning to Bangladesh in the late 1980s to re-enter the tumultuous world of Bangladeshi politics.
Hasina's political journey has been closely associated with her dedication to her father's legacy and the Awami League, the party he founded. She became the party president in 1981 and began leading the opposition. Her persistence paid off in 1996 when she became Bangladesh's first female Prime Minister. Her initial term in office was marked by significant progress, including economic liberalization, increased foreign investment, and a notable rise in living standards. Under her leadership, Bangladesh became a major player in the global garment industry, and her focus on education and healthcare was highlighted by initiatives such as providing free textbooks to schoolchildren.
Despite these achievements, Hasina's tenure has not been without controversy. Her administration has faced criticism for its strained relationship with the judiciary, leading to allegations of politicization and erosion of judicial independence. Her government's approach to political dissent, especially towards the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami party, has drawn condemnation from human rights organizations. Additionally, the 2006-2008 political crisis, characterized by violent street protests and a military-backed interim government, cast a long shadow over her leadership.
In 2009, Hasina returned to power with a landslide victory, marking the beginning of a new phase in her political career. Since then, she has secured two more terms in office. However, these victories have been marred by allegations of electoral fraud and intimidation. Critics argue that her tenure has seen a decline in democratic freedoms and a shrinking space for political dissent. Supporters, on the other hand, point to her continued focus on economic development and large-scale infrastructure projects as evidence of her commitment to the nation’s progress.
As Sheikh Hasina approaches the latter part of her political career, her legacy remains a topic of intense debate. Supporters view her as a visionary leader who has played a crucial role in transforming Bangladesh from a war-torn nation into a thriving economy. Critics, however, see her as an autocratic ruler who has compromised democratic principles and curtailed political freedoms.

Bangladesh Protests Live Updates: Internet outage monitor NetBlocks reports 'high impact to mobile networks'
Internet access in Bangladesh has been widely restricted today, service providers and monitors say, reports AFP. Internet outage monitor NetBlocks reported 'high impact to mobile networks', while an internet gateway company that sells wholesale bandwidth to service providers said 'broadband and mobile internet were shut down'.
Why are people protesting?
Protests in Bangladesh began last month as students demanded an end to a quota system that reserved 30 per cent of government jobs for the families of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence against Pakistan in 1971. As violence crested, the country's Supreme Court scaled back the quota system to 5 per cent of jobs, with 3 per cent for relatives of veterans, but protests have continued demanding accountability for violence, and the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Hasina's administration has blamed the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and now-banned right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami party and their student wings for instigating violence, in which several state-owned establishments were also torched or vandalized.
Tension heightened in Bangladesh afresh after leaders of the student movement refused Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s invitation for talks while protesters laid siege on major streets in the capital, days after more than 200 people died in anti-quota protests.
However, coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement said Friday that they had no plan to hold talks with the government, and overnight, they called a nationwide street protest and “all-out non-cooperation” or civil disobedience campaign.

Sheikh Hasina Resignation Live Updates: What are student protest leaders saying in the Facebook video?
In a video posted on social media early Tuesday morning, Nahid Islam, one of the key coordinators of the movement was seen speaking.
He said that Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus has agreed to take on this crucial responsibility at the call of the student community to save the country, the Daily Star newspaper reported.
"We took 24 hours to announce a framework for the interim government. However, considering the emergency situation, we are announcing it now. We have decided that the interim government would be formed in which internationally renowned Nobel Laureate Dr Mohammad Yunus, who has wide acceptability, would be the chief adviser," Nahid said with two other coordinators in the video.

"As there is anarchy in the country, and insecurity over people's lives, we are urging the president to take immediate and effective steps to restore law and order in the country, and that freedom-seeking students will also be on the streets to assist law enforcement forces. No government other than the one proposed by the students will be accepted. Sheikh Hasina Resignation Live Updates: 5 challenges for India, to deal with new Dhaka
1. Can India stand by its friends?
2. An immediate challenge for Delhi lies in distancing itself from Hasina and engaging her opponents.
3. Delhi must expect that Pakistan and China would try to exploit the current churn in Dhaka and nudge the new government away from India in the days ahead
4. Delhi must stop romanticising the 1971 liberation of Bangladesh. That Bangladesh is deeply divided on interpreting its history is a reality that Delhi can’t ignore.
5. Indian foreign policy discourse must recognise that developments in the neighbourhood are not just about Indian resolve, good will or strategy. India’s neighbours have politics of their own; these can’t be determined by Delhi.
Sheikh Hasina Resignation Live Updates: One key takeaway fron unexpected developments leading to Sheikh Hasina's resignation
The end of former Bangladesh PM Shiekh Hasina's 15-year reign is a stark reminder that economic progress alone cannot sustain a leader’s popularity in the face of eroding democratic values and civil liberties.
Despite noteworthy economic achievements, there was deep-seated discontent with Hasina’s increasingly authoritarian rule and the unchecked corruption, nepotism, and high-handedness.
Economic achievements:
Bangladesh transformed from one of the world’s poorest nations into one of the fastest-growing economies in the region. It even outpaced India.
The country’s per capita income tripled in a decade, and the World Bank estimates that over 25 million people were lifted out of poverty in the last 20 years.

They control, I shouldn’t say ‘they’, I should say ‘she’, because there is no ‘they’ here in Bangladesh. It is one country, one party, one leader, one narrative country. You cannot deviate from any one of these formulations. The moment you deviate from that, you’re in serious trouble. I’m in trouble forever, since the Hasina government is in power."

Bangladesh Protests Live Updates: Tracing Sheikh Hasina's political journey
Sheikh Hasina, the outgoing Prime Minister of Bangladesh, stands as one of the most influential and controversial figures in the country's political landscape. Her career, which spans several decades, reflects both remarkable achievements and significant controversies, making her a pivotal figure in understanding modern Bangladesh.
Born in 1947, Sheikh Hasina's life and career have been intricately linked with Bangladesh's own emergence as an independent nation.
