A 25-year-old man from the Meitei community was killed on Tuesday in an exchange of fire that took place across the border between Manipur’s Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts.
The deceased has been identified as Sagolsem Loya. In the exchange of fire that started on Monday night and continued into Tuesday evening, two others were also injured on the Imphal East side. The deceased and the injured were at Pukhao Shantipur, in the Meitei-dominated Imphal East district, near the border with Kuki-Zomi-dominated Kangpokpi.
An Army officer was also injured in Imphal East when security forces went to control another firing incident on Tuesday, which began at around 11.30 am, in the general area of Khamanlok Ridge.
“At approximately 12.50 pm, a Junior Commissioned Officer of the Indian Army, who was part of the column, sustained gunshot wound in his right calf. (He)…has been evacuated by helicopter to Military Hospital in Leimakhong Military Station, and his condition is reported as stable,” a Manipur Police statement said, adding that security forces were carrying out area domination to bring the situation under control.
At around 4.30 pm on Tuesday, firing also began at Kadangbad area in Imphal West district, in which one woman was injured and evacuated to a hospital in Imphal.
Meanwhile, the Committee on Tribal Unity – a Kuki-Zomi organisation in Kangpokpi district – on Tuesday accused Meitei groups of sabotaging power lines leading to an electricity blackout in Kangpokpi’s Saikul subdivision.
Over 200 people have been killed in the ethnic violence that has gripped Manipur since May 3 last year. Over the course of the past weekend, two men had been found killed in Imphal East district.
