The Season 2 finale of Wednesday ended with more questions than answers, clearly setting the stage for Season 3. The show begins with Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) over summer break, having mastered her psychic ability, only to lose it after a sudden turn of events at Nevermore. Part 1 closes with Wednesday fighting for her life after Tyler (Hunter Doohan) throws her out of a window following the chaos at Willow Hill Asylum, caused by her freeing the patients, including Tyler’s mother, Francoise, a Hyde.
By the end of Part 2, the Addams family faces major changes, with dark past connections coming to light. The series concludes with Wednesday freeing Tyler as she tries to save her brother, Pugsley, from Isaac Night and Francoise, who were using him to eliminate the Hyde inside Tyler. The choice left viewers unsure whether Wednesday still has feelings for Tyler or something else entirely. In a conversation with Variety, creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar explained some of the key story decisions.
During the interview, the host asked the showrunners why Wednesday let Tyler go when she had the chance to kill him. Gough explained that the decision was more strategic than emotional. “She needs Tyler to be the distraction so she can go save Pugsley. And I do think there’s a moment where she feels bad for Tyler, that he’s being betrayed by his family, because she feels betrayed by her family keeping these secrets from her,” he said. Gough added that the two share a weird kindred spirit that Wednesday will never admit, but that’s the connection he sees. “Ultimately, if she was going to justify it to herself, it’s simply: ‘I let him go so he could be the distraction we needed to free Pugsley.’”
The showrunners were then pressed about a potential romance plotline, asking if Tyler sees Wednesday’s act as mercy with gratitude, if he still has feelings for her, or if he might turn against her after joining the secret Hyde community that Capri suggested. “There’s a deep connection and an appreciation that they both step outside the lines of what an ordinary person would do,” Millar said, adding that their bond is currently beyond their understanding. He added that both Wednesday and Tyler are confused and surprised by their feelings for each other. “They’re not quite sure of the dance of their relationship, and that certainly hints at what could unfold in Season 3.”
The creators explained how Tyler’s character is shown as someone who struggles with self-loathing but loves the freedom his powers give him. Meanwhile, Season 2 also gave Thing an origin story. Enid’s alpha status is explained, giving her permanent werewolf powers, something she hadn’t fully realised before. Netflix has also greenlit the third season of Wednesday, though the release window is still under discussion. “Our goal for Season 3 is the same as it is for every season: to make it the best season of Wednesday we possibly can,” said Gough to Tudum. “We want to continue digging deeper into our characters while expanding the world of Nevermore and Wednesday.” Millar adds, “We will be seeing more Addams family members and learning more family secrets in Season 3!”
